Cloud Collector: Peplink
Overview
The SurfScan Cloud Collector integrates with Peplink InControl2 to automatically gather cellular signal data from your devices. This data powers coverage analysis, helping you understand network performance across your deployment.
Benefits
Fleet-wide visibility: See cellular coverage quality across all your Peplink devices
Carrier comparison: Compare signal performance between AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and others
Historical tracking: Monitor how coverage changes over time and location
Band analysis: Understand which 5G and LTE bands perform best in your areas
No device changes required: Works with your existing InControl2 setup
Requirements
To use the Cloud Collector, you need:
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Peplink devices | Any model with cellular modem(s) |
InControl2 account | With API access enabled |
GPS enabled | Devices must report GPS coordinates |
Online status | Devices must be connected to InControl2 |
Supported Device Types
MAX series routers
Balance series with cellular
Transit series
Any Peplink device with
gobicellular interface
Data Collected
From each device with an active cellular connection and GPS fix:
Data Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
GPS Coordinates | Device location |
|
Signal Metrics | RSRP, RSRQ, SINR, RSSI | RSRP: -85 dBm, SINR: 15 dB |
Carrier | Mobile network operator | AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon |
Band | Frequency band in use | n77 (5G), b66 (LTE) |
Technology | Network generation | 5G, LTE, 3G |
Device Info | Name, serial, model | Transit Pro, Serial: XXXX |
Signal Metrics Explained
Metric | Good | Fair | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|
RSRP (Signal Strength) | > -80 dBm | -80 to -100 dBm | < -100 dBm |
SINR (Signal Quality) | > 20 dB | 10 to 20 dB | < 10 dB |
How It Works
Polling Schedule
The collector checks your devices automatically based on their classification:
Device Type | Poll Frequency | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Mobile | Every 5 minutes | Vehicles, portable routers |
Stationary | Every 60 minutes | Fixed installations, offices |
New devices default to Stationary polling until classified. Custom intervals can be configured per device.
Data Flow
Scheduled collection: Our system queries InControl2 every 5 minutes
Device check: For each device due for polling, we fetch current status
GPS validation: Devices without GPS coordinates are skipped
Data storage: Signal readings are stored in your isolated tenant database
Analysis ready: Data is available for coverage reports and analysis
Getting Started
Step 1: Gather Your Information
You'll need to provide:
Organization Name: Your company/account name
Organization ID: Found in your InControl2 URL
https://incontrol2.peplink.com/o/abc123/dashboard ^^^^^^ This is your Org IDAPI Credentials: Client ID and Client Secret from InControl2
Step 2: Create API Credentials
Log into InControl2
Navigate to: Account → Client Application
Create a new application (or use existing)
Copy the Client ID and Client Secret
Step 3: Contact Waveriders
Send your configuration details to:
Email: support@waveriders.live
We'll set up your tenant and confirm when collection begins. First data typically appears within 10 minutes of activation.
Data Privacy & Security
Concern | How We Handle It |
|---|---|
Data isolation | Your data is stored in a dedicated tenant space, separate from other customers |
Access control | Only your authorized users can view your coverage data |
API credentials | Stored encrypted; used only to query your InControl2 organization |
Location data | Contributes to SurfScore Analysis |
Frequently Asked Questions
What if a device has no GPS?
Devices without GPS coordinates are skipped during collection. The collector requires location data to map coverage. Ensure GPS is enabled and devices have a clear sky view.
What if a device is offline?
Offline devices are not polled. Collection resumes automatically when the device reconnects to InControl2.
Can I adjust polling frequency?
Yes. Contact Waveriders support for access to the Tenant API, you will be able to adjust polling intervals for specific devices or your entire fleet.
How far back does data go?
Data is retained from the time collection begins. Historical data from before integration is not available.
Which cellular bands are tracked?
All bands reported by your Peplink devices, including:
5G NR: n77, n41, n71, n78, etc.
LTE: b2, b4, b12, b13, b66, etc.
3G: Where still in use
What about multi-SIM devices?
Devices with multiple cellular interfaces (e.g., Cellular 1, Cellular 2) report data for each active connection separately.
